Spice of the Month: Cloves [KIT]

Looking to cook something new? Give our Spice of the Month Club a try with a free sample of the spice, recipes for a main course and smaller dish or dessert to fit your needs or diet, and learn a little about the spice.

Mint
September 1-7
This month we're cooling off with a native plant: mint! This square-leafed herb, while used for chilled drinks and sweet desserts, can also bring a bright flavor to savory dishes.

Recipes this month will include-
Entrée: Stuffed Cabbage Leaves
Side: Mint, Orange, and Red Onion Salad

Turmeric
October 1-7
This month we're getting ready to celebrate Diwali, the South Asian festival of lights with samosas, lentils, or curry—and that means using turmeric. A rhizome like its cousin ginger and potatoes, raw turmeric brings a bitter and earthy flavor with a peppery finish that pairs perfectly with black peppercorns. Caution: it will stain your tupperware bright yellow, but that's half the fun!

Recipes this month will include-
Entrée: Spinach and Lentils (Saag Dhal)
Side: Turmeric-Roasted Potatoes and Cauliflower (Aloo Gobi)

Sumac
November 1-7
This month we're featuring a native plant that doesn't get enough credit: sumac. The red, bold berries of this plant stand out from the poisonous variety which has white berries. Edible sumac is dried and powdered from lemon and scarlet sumac varieties that can be a substitute for lemon juice or vinegar with its bright, slightly salty and tart flavor.

Recipes this month will include-
Entrée: Roast Chicken with Sumac and Onions
Side: Sumac-Stuffed Okra

Cloves
December 1-7
This month we're getting ready for the holidays and need a little extra oomph: enter cloves. Versatile enough to be in savory empanadas or sweet desserts, these little dried flower buds from Indonesia pack a punch with both intense sweetness and bitterness bringing the heat and astringency.

Recipes this month will include-
Entrée: Mexican-Style Turnovers (Empanadas)
Side: Sweetened Carrot Dessert (Gajar ka Halwa)

Spice of the Month kits can be picked up December 1-7 during the Library's regular hours at our Morgan Memorial and North Suffolk locations. Kits available on a first come, first served basis. No registration required.
